I have heard about those stories of this city: the tea poured into the ocean in 1773, the two oil lamps on the tops of Old North Church of 1775, and the fire burning down the Boston Trinity Church in 1872. And I have long known about the splendid academic and culture of this city: one of the oldest library of America, Boston Athenaeum, the Cutler Majestic Theatre and the hundreds of Colleges and Universities. It was this city that played a leading role in the shaping of America and it was the modern city today concentrated with different peoples and their cultures.
It is indeed Boston. I have been long expected to live and study in Boston, to walk along the “Freedom Trail”, to read for a whole day in the library and to watch an opera in the Theatre, as I have been always fascinated about history and culture ever since being able to hold books and picture albums. Therefore, I determined to apply for the Summer Honors program of Boston University. With this opportunities to spend summer in Boston University, I would be able to learn about the cities and the university. More importantly, Currently, I have developed a strong understanding of China’s history through my role as a volunteer tour guide at the Shenzhen Museum and I have scraped the surface of learning to tools to analyze history through my coursework in my AP World History class, during the summer, I would like to expand my knowledge about history, culture and anthropology and skills of analyzing history through the rigorous study in the Summer Honor program and also to apply the theories learned in class into higher-level study. Many of the various undergraduate-level courses provided by Boston University’s Summer Honor program allow me to achieve this goal during the summer holiday. I can see myself taking courses such as introduction to cultural anthropology to build up different worldviews as well as skills to analyze the changes and development of culture and history. Also, courses like Archaeology of Boston would allow me not only to learn about the city but also be introduced to the fascinating field of archaeology.
