On contrary of the South, on that moment the North was well known as an industrialized society. Manual labor was a crucial element of development as well, but not slave labor. In addition, immigration was active. Only between 1790 and 1860, about five million people journeyed from Europe to the United States. The largest part of the migrants was searching for economic openings working at factories and building train tracks. Meantime, the South was resisting industrialization, producing goods mostly on import. When the goods import taxes increased, southerners enlarged the value of manufactured products. In the same time, high tariffs in the North were involved to protect local products from low-priced foreign competition.
