Dear __________,
A deep drive to learn is one of the core qualities that define me - nothing disinterests me. I believe in finding learning in all things, in any situation. The desire to learn itself drives me, not necessarily interest or excitement or what may commonly be associated with the learner. A key component to my learning is diversity, that is, multiple perspectives; I find it important – a necessity – to put my heart into understanding difference.
During my study of “Progress” in AP Language & Composition last year, I paid close attention to my AP Biology teacher’s thoughts and ideas of the world and change, and noticed how different these were from the texts and concepts we studied in English. What I view as the most important culminating idea from my study of the topic is that, at least for me, finding the point, for the sake of simplicity, of convergence of disparity is the beginning of a greater becoming. From “Progress” I learned how important the idea of “we” is to me, and just as many people like to talk about “purpose” and “meaning” – well, mine in learning is to, quite simply, transform it into progress. At least that is my vision, what I strive to do.
I have found community service as a great outlet for my academic and ideological passions, as well as a great time to immerse myself in yet another perspective, another people. In my three years of experience in community service, I have come upon various accomplishments. As the president of the club for the past few months, I have focused my time on conveying both my passion for science as well as improving the overall structure and management of the club. Of the former, I have been planning and conducting weekly scientific experiments with the students, in hopes of giving them an opportunity to find a creative outlet, expression through scientific curiosity, while at the same time discussing the so-called bigger picture – the connection between simple classroom experiments and what goes on in the world or society. I have also been working on reforming the club from within by bringing together our members, and making community service at its base a collaboration of students. By dedicating the resources of our club to our members, and by coming together to brainstorm ideas for lesson plans, techniques, goals, we can effectively bring our passions and interests to the constituents we serve. We are also working on involving the many talents of faculty not limited to high school teachers, which has found success with a group of elementary students going on their own service trips each week. Overall this is an arduous process of following-up, extensive communication with members, the team, and teachers in figuring out exactly what and why we want to do something, and of course, making sure action is carried out. I find this to be a fair example of a leader, and a follower – a full experience in communication.
While I have striven to express my thoughts and underlying reasoning, I am really quite simple. I am very optimistic, but also love pessimism; constantly happy but also sad. I love dreams and the sound they make when they shatter. The college application is about creating an image. In a sentence: I am a farmer without a farm, who longs for growth and creation but also to see the famine fall, and who will one day start a farm himself.
It is a bad feature of the numerous societies, but the habit to stereotype different races is too common worldwide. The biggest part of stereotypes is concerning African Americans, who faces black stereotypes very often. These negative stereotypes have been all around in America since slavery. In that time, the stereotypes played its significant role, as they were justifying enslavement of Africans. Therefore, showing Africans as aggressive and dangerous pagans was helping slaveholders to get more slaves. It was common thought that slaveholders helped captured Africans by enslaving them. Nowadays, the biggest problem of the modern society is racism in the media. The dominance of stereotypes in films and T.V. shows reached its peak. In the same time, people get wrong and negative view of African American lifestyle watching programs and movies full of stereotypes. Many ways of picturing African Americans are very wrong. This question very often becomes the main theme for writing essays nowadays.
